Dear Community Leader:

Hurricane Season 2007 begins June 1. Are you ready? Anne Arundel County in partnership with the Citizen Corps Council encourage all residents to attend this year’s Community Disaster Preparedness meeting on June 5, 2007 from 7:00-9:00 pm. at the Anne Arundel Community College, Thomas E. Florestano Building, Room 101, Arnold, MD 21012.

Each year Anne Arundel County faces many weather-related emergencies as well as a few man-made ones. Events such as Tropical Storm Isabel cause major damage to our county and recovery can take years. Some events may be short-lived but still endanger our citizens. The February 2007 ice storm resulted in tens of thousands of power outages during freezing temperatures. Many residents lacked heat, water, and a means to receive public notices following the storm.

We know that disasters can impact our county and our neighborhoods at any time. Being prepared can save lives and property, and improve our recovery time.

This June 5th meeting will provide you with the basic information you need to prepare for many kinds of possible disasters in your community. County staff that is knowledgeable about emergency preparedness will discuss and answer your questions about disaster planning for families, communities, and the county and region at large. Please see the flyer included with this letter for more information and distribute this information in your community. You may also contact the Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Management at 410-222-0600 for more information.

I hope you will attend this important public meeting and encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to attend.

Sincerely,

JOHN R. LEOPOLD County Executive
