  1. Grant Writing and Financial Reporting Workshop, Jan 30th: This workshop sponsored by the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County will be held on Tuesday, January 30, 2007, 4:00 -6:00 p.m. at the Heritage Center, Chesapeake Room, 2nd Floor, 2664 Riva Rd., Annapolis. The workshop will review the guidelines and application forms for the Arts Council's FY2008 Community Arts Grants. Increased competition for funding makes successful grant writing and reporting a crucial part of any arts organization. Linda Walsh, CPA and President of Walsh & Associates Financial Services, will present "Financial Reporting for Nonprofits" covering the IRS and state reporting requirements for nonprofits. The deadline for applications to receive a fiscal year 2008 grant is April 21, 2007. The Coordinators of Volunteers of Anne Arundel County Invite you To a Brown Bag Luncheon Presentation On EVENT PLANNING, Feb 8th, Noon – 1:30 pm: Each year, First Night Annapolis puts on one of the largest events in our county. It seemed to COVAAC that not many organizations could really talk to us about how something this big comes together and is successful. Come learn all about Event Planning from Bob Keil, the Executive Director of First Night Annapolis, and his Volunteer Coordinator, Felicia Barlow. When: February 8, 2007, 12 Noon to 1:30 PM, We will start with a short meeting. The presentation Will begin at 12:30 PM. Where: Anne Arundel Community College, Cade Building—Room 219. What to bring: A lunch and your questions about event planning!

Anne Arundel Council of Community Services, Community Conversation & Luncheon, Feb 13th, Noon - 2:00 pm Topic: “Are We Serving Our Children Well?”: The Anne Arundel Council of Community Services invites you to attend their Panel Discussion/Luncheon at Café Mezzanote in Severna Park on Feb. 13th, 12 Noon to 2:00 P.M. Lunch: $20.00. Menu choices: Pasta Primavera or Chicken Marsala. Panelists participating in this Community Conversation will include Dr. Frank Sullivan, Director of A.A. Mental Health; Ms. Mary Tillar, Director of Special Education, AACPS; Ms. Elizabeth Savage, Local Management Board; Ms. Pam Smelser, Director of Community Services, DSS; and Ms. Kate Weisiger, Department of Juvenile Services. Mrs. Heidi Katz from Anne Arundel Medical Center will be the moderator. Seating is limited.   5. Carl M. Freeman Foundation Launches F.A.C.E.S. Grant Cycle: The Carl M. Freeman Foundation is launching its fourth grant cycle in Anne Arundel County. Non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations located in and serving Anne Arundel County, Maryland are eligible to apply for grant money through the F.A.C.E.S. (Freeman Foundation Assists Communities with Extra Support) Grants Program. F.A.C.E.S. grants are small grants ($500 - $2,000) designed to support initiatives that may not cost a lot of money, but are integral to meeting community needs. Guidelines and the application are available on www.freemanfoundation.org. Applications are due via email by Feb 7, 2007. Winning organizations will be announced in June 2007.
  6. Parole Rotary Foundation Grants: The Parole Rotary Foundation is pleased to consider your nonprofit charitable organization’s request for a grant. The Foundation was established by the Parole Rotary Club to support charitable, civic and educational programs (focusing on the needs of our community, youth, and the elderly) that benefit the citizens of Anne Arundel County. Most of the Foundation’s funds are provided by Parole Rotary Club fund raising activities and the Rotary 300 Foundation fund raising activities. These funds are supplemented by gifts from individuals and corporations. The next grant deadline is February 28th for the spring awards.   7. Alliance For Children and Families Reveals Top Trends in Human Services: An annual report on trends in human services details scores of issues impacting American society in categories such as the economy, population and immigration, drugs, education, health care, poverty and homelessness, violence, technology, disasters and the workforce. The report, "Scanning the Horizons 2006-2007," is published annually by the Alliance for Children and Families, a national association of private, nonprofit human service agencies and organizations. The Severson Center, as part of the Alliance, is a national clearinghouse of information and knowledge for nonprofit human service professionals.   8. Increase the Effectiveness of Your Volunteer Program: Three workshops from the Volunteer Management Training Series developed by the Points of Light Foundation and presented by the Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County will be offered this semester. Thanks to a partnership with Anne Arundel Community College, you can sign up for the following courses: Recruiting & Placing Volunteers (CMD 375) on Friday, Feb 2nd, 9 am – 12:45 pm; Orienting & Training Volunteers (CMD 376) on Friday, Feb 16th, 9 am – 12:45 pm; and Supervising Volunteers (CMD 377) on Friday, May 4th, 9 am – 12:45 pm. The cost is $40 per course, including materials. For class locations and to register contact AACC at 410-777-2325.
  9. Learn About Operating a Disaster Volunteer Mobilization Center: A Volunteer Mobilization Center (VMC) is a referral center for spontaneous, unaffiliated volunteers (community members) who respond to an emergency or disaster. Disaster response and recovery organizations many require additional volunteers. Learn how to train volunteers to staff a VMC in a time of natural or man-made disaster. Find out how to cope with logistical challenges, security issues as well as inexperienced volunteers. Attend the Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County’s next VMC training on Saturday, February 24, 2007 from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm at Anne Arundel Community College. Advance Registration is required. Course Number: CMD 371. Registration fee is $15.00. For registration information call AACC at 410-777-2325.
